BRC Publishes Interpretation Guideline For Global Standard For Storage And Distribution Issue 2

Originally introduced in 2006, the BRC Global Standard for Storage and Distribution was developed by a multi-stakeholder group including industry representatives, certification bodies and retailers, to provide the essential certification link between the range of BRC manufacturing Standards and the end users; retailers and food service companies. The Standard is designed to ensure best practice in handling, storage and distribution of products and promotes continuous improvement in operating practices to ensure product safety, quality and legality. It also enables certification of a range of contracted services commonly operated by storage companies on behalf of their customers to take into account the often diverse operations and networks making up the distribution chain.

The Interpretation Guideline explores the principles behind each of the requirements of the Standard clause by clause, identifying methods of compliance. It assists companies in effective implementation across all industry sectors, helping manufacturers to obtain certification to the Standard.

Thomas Owen, BRC Global Standards Storage and Distribution Scheme Manager, said: “Since we now have over 1,000 sites certificated to the BRC Global Standard for Storage and Distribution, the development of the Interpretation Guideline was key to ensure all our sites are able to interpret clauses accurately and understand the requirements of the Standard. There are legal and ethical guidelines that aim to streamline the practice of psychological consultation. Despite the well-meaning basis for the formulation of these guidelines, conflicts arise between the legal and ethical codes and the practice of modern psychology. These conflicts render intended treatment of patients to be potentially harmful and leads to iatrogenic illnesses in patients, or illness that is precipitated, worsened, or introduced by the attitude and examination of the physician during treatment (Cited in Boisvert & Faust, 2002). This essay seeks to explore three key ethical or legal issues and analyze their implications for the practices of prevention, intervention, and/or consultation. Ways of practically addressing the issues will also be described.

Relevant Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct

Informed Consent. Practitioners are expected to obtain informed consent from their patients. This has the implication that the patient must be informed of the nature of treatment, its potential risks and the available alternative treatments (APA, 2010).

Psychological Assessment. Psychologists are allowed to solely base their assessment on the review of medical records of the patient. The code also limits the psychologists to the use of established methods in the assessment of a potential patient, while informing the patient of the nature of the testing to be carried out. Informing the client is to be done in a language that is reasonably understood by the test subject (APA, 2010).

Related Iatrogenic Outcomes

The insistence on the use of established methods in the assessment of patients means that psychiatric categorization is bound to be used. This may result in the use of labels that may make the patient to gather a distorted view of their condition, thus increasing anxiety and distress. Moreover, by allowing for a diagnosis based solely on a previous clinical record, the psychologist is exposed to biases that arise from the use of clinical labels by other psychologists. He will thus be inclined to see most of the patient's behavior as being attributed to the condition (Boisvert & Faust, 2002).

The code of ethics maintains that a patient is to be informed prior to assessment and after in a bid to ensure that they understand the procedures, the test results and possible treatment options. During the communication of this information, a practitioner risks imposing the belief on the patient that they know more about the patient than the patient knows about themselves. The vulnerable patient is then bound to unconditionally accept the verdict of the practitioner, thus weakening their support systems. While the use of a language that is considered friendly to the patient can be instrumental in eliminating potentially harmful labels, the flip side of this is the potential for misinterpretation by the patient, or the misleading of the psychologist into believing they have communicated the desired message whereas it is possible that they have not (Boisvert & Faust, 2002).

Mitigating Iatrogenesis

To offset the possible negative ramifications brought about by the legal and ethical codes, a variety of measures have been proposed. These include: complementing the patient's support systems in diagnosis and treatment, focusing on building on the positives to reach a solution, and carefully weighing all evidence before reaching a diagnosis.

Negative effects are inevitable in the practical application of psychological treatment. However, the psychologist is tasked with ensuring that the negative impact of therapy is eliminated or minimized when elimination is not possible. Iatrogenesis can arise when preparing the patient for assessment and during assessment. The negative effects can be mitigated by complementing the patient's support systems, focusing on building on the positives to reach a solution, and carefully weighing all available evidence before reaching a diagnosis.
